Accompanied Development

Accompanied Development is the name we have chosen to describe the provision of a safe space for one-to-one conversations, with appropriately trained person, which develops personal reflective practice.

It can come in many forms, such as coaching, mentoring, pastoral supervision and spiritual direction. Different forms of accompanied development can be chosen at different times as appropriate.

The person accompanying facilitates the process, which may lead to certain outcomes such as enhanced personal effectiveness, greater resilience in managing change, self-directed learning and development, enhanced spiritual formation.

Pastoral Supervision

Pastoral Supervision is a structured and spiritually grounded process where a trained supervisor helps a supervisee reflect on their ministry. It provides a safe, confidential space for exploring their practice, guided by trust and openness, with the goal of fostering personal and ministerial growth. The relationship is rooted in a theological and vocational sense, encouraging clarity, new insights, and renewed vision.

The purpose of Pastoral Supervision is to support the supervisee’s wellbeing and development, benefiting both them and those they serve. It offers a reflective space to process experiences, gain new perspectives, and find hope. Research highlights its role in reducing loneliness in spiritual leadership, enhancing self-awareness, and encouraging deeper connection with God’s guidance.

Spiritual Direction (Coming Soon)

Spiritual Direction is a guided, intentional relationship where a trained spiritual director helps a person reflect on their life to discern and recognise God’s presence and grace.

The purpose of Spiritual Direction is to deepen the individual’s relationship with God and clarify how to respond to God’s call in daily life. It offers a space for exploring spiritual experiences, recognising God’s guidance, and fostering spiritual growth. Through this process, the individual gains a clearer understanding of how to live out their faith in a more integrated and authentic way.

Retreats (Coming Soon)

Throughout the ages, the Christian tradition has understood ‘Retreat’ to be an important part of spiritual formation. That is, time consciously set aside for God, a change of focus, a deliberate act of stepping outside of normal routine by withdrawing (not running away) from the noise and pressures; the immediate and insistent claims of our social, domestic, and workaday responsibilities to be in a quiet place where all our senses are open and ready to listen to God.

Pre COVID 19, William Booth College made the decision to refurbish one of the houses within its grounds to create a designated and dedicated area for retreat and spiritual formation. Over the following years developments have taken place and we are now thrilled to be able to announce the opening of ‘The Retreat’ (aka House 9) early 2025. The interior of House 9 is now a welcoming and calming space that encourages a sense of peace and invites reflection. A programme of quiet days, self-guided and guided retreats, along with Spiritual Direction will soon be available to the Territory.

Mentoring (Coming Soon)

Mentoring is a supportive and developmental relationship where an experienced mentor provides guidance, advice, and encouragement to a mentee. It is typically a long-term, trusted relationship that focuses on the mentee’s personal and professional growth. Through regular conversations, the mentor shares their knowledge and experience, offering insights to help the mentee navigate challenges, set goals, and build confidence in their abilities.

Mentoring emphasises building skills, gaining new perspectives, and exploring opportunities. Mentoring helps mentees enhance their self-awareness, maximize their strengths, and overcome obstacles, while also supporting their long-term aspirations and goals.
