Mental Health First Aid

Course Details

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training equips individuals with the knowledge and confidence to identify the signs of poor mental health, initiate supportive conversations, and effectively guide a person toward appropriate professional or self-help resources.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Explain what mental health is
  • Describe how to look after their own mental health and wellbeing
  • Describe the signs of possible poor mental health in others
  • Explain some of the risk factors associated with poor mental health.
  • Demonstrate how to apply theMHFA action plan (ALGEE) in a MHFA conversation
  • Describe the role of a Mental Health First Aider

Additional Information

Course Duration: 16 hours (4 x 4 hour sessions)

Assessment: Delegates will demonstrate understanding through discussion, response to questions and feedback from group work and case studies.

Open to all officers and employees who, in the course of their work, are supporting people in mental distress.

Note: Costs for Learning and Development course programme are covered by departmental employee/officer levy payments. However, should an employee/officer book a place on a course but then subsequently fail to attend or complete the course, repayment of cost of the course will be charged to the department/appointment concerned (recoverable from the individual) (Policy CS04 Sect 6.5). Please note a separate process for funding approval exists for accredited programmes.
