Suicide Awareness and Support

Course Details

This course provides a learning opportunity to enable participants to improve their knowledge of suicide at a foundation level and to consider how they will use the knowledge to inform their practice, allowing them to discuss and practice in a safe space. The course is aimed at employees and officers of The Salvation Army with little or no prior learning on the subject.
Course content includes: factors, signs, language, myths and stigma, feelings and reactions, responsibilities and limitations, and working with others.
 

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, delegates will:

  • Be able to list at least 5 factors that contribute to someone being at risk of suicide.
  • Be able to detail at least 5 signs that could indicate someone is contemplating suicide.
  • Learn about the language and myths that feed into the stigma of suicide and use this knowledge to modify learner’s own language and behaviour.
  • Explore personal feelings and reactions and understand how these can affect conversation about suicide.
  • Understand and identify your responsibilities and limitations and know when, how, and why you should work closely with colleagues/ mental health professionals /emergency services.
  • Understand the concept of “being safe for now”.

Additional Information

Course Duration: 5 Hours

Pre-course Learning: Desirable that participants complete ZSA Suicide Awareness Training on iLearn.

Assessment: Demonstrate understanding through discussion, response to questions and feedback from group activities.

Who Should Apply

Officers/Chaplains: Open to all officers and Chaplains.

Corps and other departments: Open to staff from corps and other departments with support from line manager.

HSU: This course is essential for anyone in a support role. It is open to other staff as part of professional development.

£10 (Online)

Note: Costs for Learning and Development course programme are covered by departmental employee/officer levy payments. However, should an employee/officer book a place on a course but then subsequently fail to attend or complete the course, repayment of cost of the course will be charged to the department/appointment concerned (recoverable from the individual) (Policy CS04 Sect 6.5). Please note a separate process for funding approval exists for accredited programmes.
